How do you pronounce coyote?

Do you say it with the e or without the e? My son and I are debating it.

  • It depends on where you live. I've heard Ky -yo-tee and ky-yote. I don't know if there is an official correct pronunciation, but you'll hear it both ways.

  • I found a dictionary link that gives audio pronounciation files. It lists both actually. I think we were more wondering which was more common, not which was accurate. Sorry I wasn't clear.

  • Here in the Southwest desert, they often say KY-OH-TAY, with a spanish accent. It is generally referring to illegal alien smugglers. Those kind of coyotes are also called scum-of-the-earth.
