You must do your research and find a reputable, non-profit company. Credability (Consumer counseling credit service, Atlanta) is a good one. It has been mentioned on several money radio shows. We started almost 5 long years ago...and will have all of our credit cards payed off this Dec. YAY!!!
An honest company will tell you, it looks bad on your credit initially (like you're behind on payments), but once you're done, your credit score will pick up. We even had to buy a used car about 1 year ago--got a loan at our credit union, with the same rate they offer everyone. The economy has worked in our favor a bit.
