Allergic to breastmilk?

I was watching 19 Kids and Counting and Michelle Duggar was talking about their premie, Josie being allergic to breastmilk. I have never heard of that before. How common is it?

  • Ive never heard of it either. I would think the baby is more likely to be reacting negatively to something in the mother's diet than actually be allergic to the milk.

  • Its more than likely a reaction to something in her diet!

  • OK, so if the baby is lactose intolerant, couldn't Mom just change her diet rather than stop breastfeeding all together? Just wondering because it seems like a premie would most definitely need Mom's milk.

  • Yea, I'm pretty sure it has EVERYTHING to do with moms diet. Too bad if she doesn't keep BF, but to each their own!!

  • I'm pretty sure that all she'd have to do is cut dairy out of her diet. I'm no expert but I vaguely remember my home nurse mentioning that to me because I was concerned about my DS2 being lactose intolerant like his older brother was.
