What does PU stand for (as in "PU, that stinks!")?

  • hahaha...I looked that up the other day, because my daughter says it all the time (she got it from me changing her diaper) and yes, it has a french origin.

  • 1. The French term "peur" which means "to stink" thus P.U. is a shortened expression to say that you stink.

    2. It's a shortened term for puteo, which is Latin for "to stink, be redolent, or smell bad."

    3. It's actually spelled "pew," but is often pronounced as "pee-yew". It's root is the Indo-European word "pu," meaning to rot or decay.

  • lol. This is a good question. I make the sound when I smell something bad. For instance, while changing a diaper I say "PEEEW that sinks!!" ...thinking about it now I have no idea why I say that. >.
