Toddler poop question?

My 2 year old always has loose stool. Not runny, just loose. It's been like that all his life. People always think he has diarrhea. If he does pass a solid, it's very rare. He was breast fed for a year, so I chalked the first year to that. But now that we are thinking of starting potty training, that loose mushy poop does not sound fun cleaning that out of the potty chair. But more seriously, could it be the signs of a bowel problem?

  • If he's growing properly and is healthy then it sounds like it may just be his normal. Also, "loose poop" can mean different things to different people. It's possible that people think he has diarrhea because they are used to seeing somewhat constipated poop and think of that as normal. If memory serves, ideally their poop should be roughly the consistency of peanut butter. As for the potty chair cleaning... it might not be as bad as you think. Poop doesn't get mushed into the potty chair like it does in a diaper. The diaper is way messier. Good Luck.

  • I'd just make sure he's not getting artificial fiber (in some cereals and yogurts etc...)
