tie dye, how do you keep the colors bright

We have been tie dying with tulip dye and we cant seem to keep the colors bright. once we wash them the color fades to pastel color rather than a bright color like it was...any tips? and we do soak them in soda ash first!

  • Make sure to let them sit before washing at least 12 hours. And mix with less water than directed.

  • Hmmm, not sure. I like using the tulip dye and have never had an issue with fading. I've had fading issues with Rit, though. I'll give you a bump and hope someone else can give you an answer!

  • I thought about this last night as I was trying to fall asleep... :p

Are you using the dye all at once? Or are you letting it sit for hours/days? The dye has to be used within 2 hours to retain it's color.

  • I had another thought about it. You also have to wash the clothes first to get rid of the formaldehyde.
