  • Brunello di Montalcino is a good red. It is from the Tuscany region. 1999 or 2004 are good years to buy.

  • Zaca Mesa Syrah from the Santa Ynez Valley. Go for 06. But be CAREFUL with Syrahs. A good Syrah is like..a big, bold, coats your mouth and makes beg for another glass...a bad Syrah drinks like cough syrup. There are only a few estates that make a Syrah that doesn't make me sad. This one is fairly inexpensive (I've paid between 17-23 for this estate and year) but packs a hellluva punch. (15% alc/vol)

  • Go to a couple of wine tasting at area wine or liquor shops. They are free, and you will learn a bit about wine.

  • It is hard because you never know if people like sweeter or what. A shiraz-cab blend is great for a lot of people though.
