  • 1 bar of Fels Naptha, Zote, or Ivory: grate up and put in water, simmer until dissolved
1 cup borax and 2 cups washing soda in hot water in a 5 gal bucket
Add dissolved soap mixture to 5 gal bucket, fill to top with hot water
Let sit for 24 hours, will gel
Add this mixture in equal parts with water, makes 10 gallons of detergent. Add 1/2-3/4 c for top load washers and 1/4c to front will not suds up.

  • Oh and I forgot to add that 1 cup of vinegar is a great fabric softener. You can also make softener sheets by taking 1 bottle of downey (or your choice just don't get the cheap stuff) and mix with 2 parts water. throw a sponge in the mixture and wring out, toss in dryer.

  • Google "homemade laundry detergent" and you'll get scads of hits - most recipes are pretty identical. I've not used it yet, but I have friends that swear by it. It doesn't have any fillers or crap that are bad for your machine & clothes, that's for sure, not to mention no artificial scents, dyes, or other things that wreak havoc on sensitive people.
