What are some good beginner projects for someone new at sewing?

I received my mom's sewing machine and have a lot of free time on my hands. I would like to start sewing as a new hobby. Any suggestions for something easy to start with? I want to make curtains for my apt for sure. What else is not too complicated?

  • Pillow cases, pillows, skirts, dress tops, sun dresses, hats, scarfs, cloth dolls, mittens, are all fairly easy projects. Joanne fabrics (if you have one near by) has lots of patterns for decent prices and they aren't that hard to figure out with a pattern. Walmart also sells patterns. If you have any questions on sewing send me a message, I grew up with my mother who is a seamstress and I learned a lot from her so if there's anything you're unsure of I can probably help and if not I know who to ask :)

  • Table clothes are good starters. So are pillows. The "easy" patterns with McCall or Simplicity are good starters. A simple baby quilt (were you cute squares and piece them together) is a good one. Find something you want to make and set a goal. Sometimes kids Halloween costumes are a good for beginners and then you don't have to buy a generic one.

  • My first project in high school sewing class was an apron. Very simple. If you are teaching a child, doll clothes. If you like hand embroidery, dishtowels.

  • Oh, and for anything with a seam, you might want to learn a French seam (sounds fancy, but it's really easy) so that you don't have the fringy look after one washing. That or do it the easy way and get a serger.
