Does elementary school have after school sports for kids?

My DD wants to do cheerleading and I just didn't know whether or not I would have to go to an outside source.

  • I can't speak for all elementary schools, but usually school sports don't appear until Jr. High/Middle school.

  • You have to go to an outside source for school sponsored sports before 7th grade. 7th grade and up you can do school sponsored cheerleading, football, baseball, track, etc.

  • The only sports are football, tennis, basketball, wrestling, gymnastics, baseball, softball, swimming, and soccer. They are run through our community education department for elementary kids. Cheerleading isn't considered a sport and the girls aren't able to try out until they are in senior high school. Space is limited and its very cliquey. You might be able to find a cheerleading camp. But with my experience, I'd keep my kids out of that environment as long as possible. The girls here involved are promiscuous, drink, and are very wild. Not good role models for young children and I wouldn't want my kids looking up to them at all.

  • Anon - I was a cheerleader and I don't appreciate your assessment! OP - Look around your area, there is most likely some organization that has football and they usually have a cheerleading program to go along with it.

  • Cheerleading is a sport. I went to grad school at Ball State University and they had cheerleading camps there all summer for high school girls. In IN there are cheerleaders in elementary schools.

If you can't find anything for her age for cheerleading then gymnastics or diving would be good. You may be able to find classes at your local community college or university. My son took both at Ball State when he was elementary school age. Other universities where I have been a student have had similar programs for kids in the community. They may even have cheerleading.
