A negative result is not reliable at that point in your cycle. However, a positive result is reliable no matter when you get it. You are very unlikely to get a positive result any sooner than 5 days before your period is due. However, since many women have some variance in their mentrual cycles, it is possible to get a positive test result much soon that you might expect, since you may have ovulated earlier than usual that particular month.
