What do I do when my toddler starts to cry desperately when I leave a room?

My son is 20 months old and just recently he has started to cry like I left him forever, when I am just in the other room.

  • My 18 month old does the same thing. I just tell her I'll be right back or I come and get her. Sometimes I just let her cry depending on how long it is that I'm in another room for.

  • Google 'Separation Anxiety' this is age appropriate behaviour.

  • Before you leave the room, let him know that you are leaving and you will be right back and then just go about your business and let him cry if he cries. Maybe as you are in another room, continue to talk to him so that he knows you aren't gone forever.
