  • My twin girls are 3 and pick out and dress themselves all the time, though when it comes to school time I will make sure their cloths at least match LOL.

  • John is five.

    he doesn't read yet,
showering on his own (we are always in the bathroom with him, but he washes his self) at 3 1/2-4
Since he was one he's picked out his own clothes
Since he was one he's brushed his own hair, But if he wants to styled I do it for him. Bc he'll ask me nicely too.

(Kinda funny you posted this, because earlier I posted one about my child being too indepenent!)

Its never to early to start... You can help her, but let her pick what she wants to wear, how she wants to wear her hair...

  • My daughter can dress her self just not pick out matching outfits lol... My hubby thinks she should be able to match her own outfits and dress her self

  • My son turned 5 in May, he does all of the above apart from reading on his own although we have started to learn :)
It helps to let him pick him own clothes because then he doesn't throw a fit in the morning about what he is going to wear. I make him take a shower every other day whereas he gets to play in the bath on the other days... I let him comb his hair because he doesn't like the way I do it :)

  • My son is 5 and starting K this fall too. He is not reading, (my SD8 was not reading when she hit K either nor was the most of her class), he can wash himself in the shower but I have to do his hair. I tell him what he needs to wear for the weather and picks out his clothes. Hair not really an issue as its a 1/4 in long. My daughter, 4, can brush her own hair, but it is stick strait and sholder length. SD8 has curly hair and struggles with hers. Relax. Everything will be fine.

  • ~Start Reading on his/her own? DS (7yo) was 5.5. DD (5yo) just started Kindergarten and isn't reading yet, but she just turned 5 not even two months ago. She knows all of her letters and the sounds they make. We're working on putting words together now.

~Start showering on his/her own? DS was 5. DD is just starting to shower on her own, wash her body and hair and is doing great.

~Picking out his/her clothes? DS just turned 7 and has been picking out his own clothes for awhile, can't remember exactly least a year. DD picks out her own clothes and actually does a decent job, but still needs a little

~Doing his/her own hair? I keep DS's hair short, but I still "spike it" for him. DD brushes her hair, but cannot style it by herself...don't see her doing this for awhile.

  • ~Start Reading on his/her own?
My child is 5 and she doesn't read yet the only thing is she can spell her name which is Renee she just learned that. She can spell red and that is because her friend 7 tought her lol. She can spell Bath because I spell it to let my DH know I am taking one cause my 2.5 year oldloves bath lol, but that is all she can spell.

    ~Start showering on his/her own?
my oldest 5 years takes baths. She can't wash her hair yet so I do that, but I put soap on a sponge for her and she washes herself then I let her play unattended for a bit.

    ~Picking out his/her clothes?
I let both my girls pick out clothes I can careless how they are dressed really, but if we go out in public or I know we will be going out I will change my 2.5 year old. My 5 year old pretty much knows how to match clothes on some clothes its hard so she will ask me if it matches lol

    ~Doing his/her own hair?
No I have to do it

~Start Reading on his/her own? My almost 4 year old is starting to learn to read, but is nowhere near reading on her own yet.
~Start showering on his/her own? She bathes on her own, and has been doing so since she turned 3. But, she has very short takes forever to grow. If she had longer hair, I'd have to help her wash it.
~Picking out his/her clothes? She picks out her own clothes most of the time, unless there's something specific I want her to wear, like if we're getting pictures done or going someplace special.
~Doing his/her own hair? She doesn't have enough hair to really 'do', but she combs/brushes her own hair.

  • reading...k-1st grade.....dressing...should be doing already..picking out clothes...she should be...with suggestions of course...showering/bathing...she should be with final rinse check and supervision from parent....doing own hair...its hit or miss...she will start being more competent at that around 9 to 10...
