Why can't we take Advil while pregnant?

I heard something about the heart function. Anyone know for sure?

  • according to the FDA ibuprofen has been linked to a heart defect in babies. The FDA does allow you to take it through the 2nd trimester though.

  • It's been linked to heart valve defects in infants when taken in the first trimester, and also can cause placental abruption.

  • any NSAID - non steroidal anti inflammatory drug - can cause bleeding to occur and huge stomach and stomach acid issues (people with ulcers etc) - Tylenol is not an NSAID and that is why it's recommended for pain - but it is processed in the liver and excess Tylenol can be a problem as well. I guess that degree in pharmacology means something after all :)

  • It's in the same pregnancy category as tylenol (B) in the 1st and 2nd trimester. Not safe to take 3rd trimester because it increases the risks of premature closure of the ductus ateriousis in the baby's heart.
