  • According to the law: yes. According to me: no. However, I just don't like the label hate crime. I feel that all crimes should carry the same weight, and it is only because we are desensitized to crime as a community that we have to call a crime "badder" because it has hate. All crimes have hate.

  • If white people specifically are being picked out to be beaten, then I would think it was a hate crime.

  • Why wouldn't it be? Hate crimes don't discriminate, they can happen to anyone.

  • Urkidding is right. By law it's a hate crime. But all crimes of violence represent hate,IMO.

That is a very good question I would love for the Des Moines Register to answer. Why do they hesitate? Would it be different if it were white kids saying "beat _______ night" (fill in any other group)? I have a feeling we already know this answer. So, why treat it differently.
