What is your BMI? .. and do you think it's right about your weight category? (calc inside)

If it says you are underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese... do you agree? Why or why not?

  • LOL...41.1 Obese. Well, I am 5'2" and 225, so...I suppose it's right. I look overweight though, not obese. What do you think?

  • When the bmi came out, it involved a VERY complicated algorithm including height, weight and waist measurement. Today, that's all been dumbed down (because it's too hard, no one can do that... grr) so it's only height and weight, and it means that a body builder with 8% bodyfat will measure as obese and an anorexic who weighs 87 pounds with 33% bodyfat is not only underweight but also 'healthier' than someone obese with 28% bodyfat...

It's healthier to check bodyfat% and to check fitness in a variety of measures --strength, speed, power, flexibility and balance. But those are hard too.

The easy answer is BMI. Sadly, it answers almost none of the questions adequately, because it's the stupid easy answer. The BMI is now as inaccurate as the old insurance charts that ALSO only read weight and height and were discarded BECAUSE of that.

  • LOL, well I'm 8 months pregnant right now, so it said I was "obese".

I calculated again with my pre-pregnancy weight, though, and I'm on the upper end of normal, which I'd say is about right.

  • my Wii Fit kept telling me I was just over the obese line when I was 175lbs, but at 5'4" , I think it's just overweight. A lot of me is muscle, which weighs more than fat. I'd love to get a real BMI test done though. Now I'm 165lbs though

  • 30 but I am still losing baby weight. With my pre-pregnancy weight I was 24.1.

  • 29.9
I'm right on the tail end of overweight, just under obese. I don't think I'm all that big, I only wear a size 12-14 in jeans, a large-Xlarge in shirts.
