  • The average cost of a drug test is about $42 per person tested,[8] not including the costs of hiring personnel to administer the tests, to ensure confidentiality of results and to run confirmatory tests to guard against false positives resulting from passive drug exposure, cross-identification with legal, prescription drugs such as codeine and legal substances such as poppy seeds.

Random drug testing of welfare recipients is fiscally irresponsible

  • they have kits that are as low as $2.79 per kit for a 10 panel drug test if you order in bulk. No hiring personnel needed to read it either, you dip the card in the urine and read very similar to a HPT. We used them all the time at the substance abuse clinic I worked at. These kits are also good for parents who want to know if their teen is using drugs.

  • ~$70 per test. 10% lead to false positives/negatives needing a retest. Total people on Welfare: The number stated that receive any portion of their support from from welfare assistance--including food stamps--it is 29,900,000 or roughly 8% of the total population in the United States.

    Total cost annually: ~2.1 Trillion

  • BTW, the most widely abused drug is MJ. So, we will abandon families for having the munchies.

  • hey, all I did was answer the question LOL I never said it was a great idea to test EVERYONE who's on welfare, even at $2.79 a person, that's a LOT of money.

and the amount of poppy seed muffins you would have to eat to fail the test is outrageous LOL tooth pulled, you bring in the Rx bottle to prove you are on the meds legitimately.

You need the additional personnel to re-test all the false-positives and screen the results, unless you want to kick all the people who eat poppyseed muffins or have a tooth pulled off the system, too. You aren't talking about screening a few hundred people here, that's regular test results for 30 million people.
