When you make homemade spaghetti sauce do you use tomato paste?

I always do but my husband says I'm not supposed to. What do you think?

  • Sometimes. Not when I use fresh tomatoes. And not when I make peanut sauce or cheese sauce.

  • My grandparents are from Naples... I was taught to make it with two large cans of sauce, one regular can of paste and water. The secret to authentic sauce is what you add after that. Grandma always added some sugar and the our secret stash of herbs and a sprinkling of cheese. The rich flavor of the sauce came from the meatballs, sausage and neck bones....which is the key! It is also required in any good Italian household that it cooks all day on Saturday and is served on Sunday! LOL...

  • I use a small can of paste when making it from scratch. My hubby is from Sicili and his momma taught me to make sauce using a can of paste. A Real dego cant be wrong.

  • Sometimes. If it's really runny & doesn't taste tomato-y enough when it's done I'll stir some in. There's nothing wrong with using it, there's nothing wrong with not using it - it's all personal preference IMO.
