Did you hear about the freed American & the pledge from N. Korea?

SEOUL (AFP) – Former US president Jimmy Carter flew out of North Korea Friday after securing the release of an American citizen and a pledge from Pyongyang that it wants to resume nuclear disarmament talks.

The Nobel peace laureate left the reclusive communist state with Aijalon Mahli Gomes, an African-American who was jailed for illegally crossing into the North from China.

"At the request of president Carter, and for humanitarian purposes, Mr Gomes was granted amnesty" by North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il, said a Carter Center statement.

Gomes, 30, was first detained in January and sentenced in April to eight years of hard labour and a fine of about 600,000 dollars.

  • Jimmy Carter is a good man, And he tried to do much more during his Presidency than he was 'allowed' to do. It would be a good thing if more of you would actually care enough to read about his presidency...and not on some God-awful radical right website.

  • It's too bad Carter did more good as a civilian than as POTUS.

  • Don't know why my ans. abv was anon, didn't mean it to be. I do feel Jimmie Carter can at times work miracles, and the words are cheap was against N Korea. They can say anything they want but lets see what they do. Some how Jimmie Carter was able to get the American home, and for that he and we as a Country owe him our gratitude. Hope this is by my Angel1003 not anon.
