When did you start your baby on solid food?

My little one is 4 months old, and he is 18 pounds. I am breastfeeding, but lately afterwards he doesn't seem satisfied. He grabs at the food I am eating, and stares at me constantly while I am having a meal. SO one day I gave in and bought him rice cereal and didn't try it for the longest time, and the other day I gave him some and he charged at it! and shoved it in his mouth! and enjoyed it.
Do you think it's too early? no allergies run through my family, I hope my little one doesn't get allergies.
