Skunks?

As pets? I saw skunks in a store today and have been wondering about them as domestic pets, anyone?

  • They can be de-skunked. IDK about them being pets though. Some people just like exotic pets. If no one else they know has one, they want it.

  • Even though they are "descented" they still have a smell. Same as ferrets, the anal glands are removed but there are scent glands in other places, they just don't smell as strong. As far as being a pet, they are kinda like having a ferret. I knew someone who had one and it was cute and fun to play with, but I would never want one, but then again I am not fond of ferrets either.

  • We had one as a classroom pet when I was in sixth grade. It was a female & descented, but still had a slight musky odor to her. She was cute, but not overly friendly, as she was still a wild animal and I don't think I'd want one as a pet myself.

  • There are so many better options for pets. I have known people who have owned skunks, and their greatest fear is that they get outside and are at the mercy that some people who kill skunks.

  • I had a skunk back in high school. They have the same smell as a ferret when de-scented. And the same attitude. Some can be really really friendly... others, not so much. It' all depends on how young they are when you get them, and how much you "handle" them. I loved Flower (named after the skunk in Bambi). I would totally get another one, if I didn't have cats. :)
