Any ideas on how to get a 20-month-old girl to sleep when she can't and won't fall asleep at night???

We have tried walking with her, giving her a bottle(s), watching a movie, going for a drive...she finally fell asleep while we were out but woke up when we got home and won't go back to sleep....

  • When my dd was that age and she was in the toddler bed and not a crib, we bribed her with a small radio and a flashlight. As long as she stayed in the bed, she could listen to the radio and could keep the flashlight on. After about 20 minutes she would fall asleep. We could then turn off the radio and the flashlight.

  • cut out day time naps or cut them way down. My dd would not sleep at night if she napped past 2pm, at 6-6:30pm start a regular routine........slow down time (no rough house playing etc), warm bath, pjs, a small snack and storytime then lights out. It may take awhile if she has not had a routine but if you do this everynight.........she will get used to it.

  • Cut down on her day naps. If she takes more then 1. Cut back to 1, and only make it an hour nap. Might want to change when the nap time is too. Not to early, not to late.

  • We have a small sound machine made especially for babies. It has a projector that you can put on also, and a timer. We've used it since birth and put it on for 15 mins every naptime and bedtime. Usually, she's asleep before the 15 mins are up.

  • thanks for all the advice everyone...changing nap times and quantity of naps sounds good. During nights like those, what would anyone suggest to do at the present time to get her to sleep when all those things we did try didn't work??
