Replacing a seat on a "ladder back" chair...or any chair!

So, a few days ago I posted about ladder back chairs and stuff you can do with them besides redo the seat of it. Someone suggested I cut a piece of wood and pad it for a seat instead of re weaving. I wanted to do that, but when I went to take measurements I noticed that the side poles that come from the back to front of the seat are HIGHER up than the poles that go left to right.....how would I make a solid seat for that?
