6 week old fights sleep!

my daughter will move and squirm and refuse to eat to keep herself awake...she gets tired and then cries because she is tired...she is really a pretty easygoing baby otherwise...she is not colicky and i always make sure she is well burped...any suggestions? doesnt she seem a little young for this? will she grow out of this? is it ok if i let her fuss and cry for 5 min at a time until she goes to sleep?

  • Lavender and other scents can actually stimulate babies, not soothe them. j and j is not good for the skin anyway (read the label). You can babywear in a wrap/sling and go about your daily business. if she sleeps right away great, if not let it go -- she will sleep even if she might fuss in arms.

Unless it is exceptionally cold, my girl preferes to be naked ... so try skin to skin. I'm not a fan of swaddles other than to keep a baby warm.

  • Oh, this is normal. Rock her, walk her... don't just walk away and let her cry, though. Too young.

You might be putting her down too early or too late. Watch for her sleepy signs, rather than a time on the clock.

  • First off she's not old enough to be that manipulative. If she refuses to eat then she's not hungry. It's not that she is trying to fight sleep. I'd tell the doctor that she's doing this. Maybe she just enjoys being awake and bonding with you.

  • have you tried swaddling her and rocking her? That works really well for my 7 week old, he loves to be cuddled :)

  • i LOVE that lotion! and yes it does relax her but just as she is getting sleepy and eyes are drooping she will notice shes about to drift off and o everything she can to stop it! maybe its just how some babies are...MOMMY2GABRIELLE....if she gets really really upset then swaddling is the only thing that calms her but after a few min she starts fighting it and trying to get out...ive tried it on and off and im not sure if i should keep swaddling until she gets used to it or if she hates it and i should stop...also, rocking and even a rocking motion seems to wake her up...weird i know

  • This is totally normal behavior. NO, it's not okay to let her cry, and she won't cry for 5 minutes and just go to sleep. Even cry-it-out experts (i.e. Ferber) don't recommend crying it out until 6 months of age. This little child was just brought into a very strange world, she has NO IDEA WHATS GOING ON! Please show her you care by not leaving her poor soul to cry alone.

There isn't much you can do other than try to soothe her in ways you know she likes. This too shall pass, good luck.
