  • My sister did a scavenger hunt for her kids one year. All of the friends did a scavenger hunt, you can get ideas online. Take them to a park and bring enough adults to keep an eye on them. Go to a dollar store and get "prizes" there. You can even incorporate those into the hunt. At age 5, he may have too much fun to realize he didn't open presents. Or go online and look for crafts for kids. You can make a lot of things out of stuff you would normally have in your home.

  • The past few years we have only spent five dollars on our kids for birthday and Christmas. This year our son is turning five and we are getting him fish (we already have the tank). In the past we have gotten them crayons, books, check out garage sales or craigslist. Let him pick the menu for the day!! My son loves doing that. If you plan ahead you can purchase the stuff with your regular grocery shopping so it isn't an additional expense. Let him have a movie night and stay up late! Popcorn and a movie, and maybe sleep in his sleeping bag in the living room!

  • Make some homemade cakes, which are like a dollar a piece. Call all the parents and tell then to dress their kids in old clothes. Then put the kids in the backyard with cakes and water balloons and let have a huge messy food fight. Then let them eat whats left over and make some kool-aid and it shouldnt cost more then like $20.
