How long does it take to replace a roof?

The people across the street are having theirs done and the roofers are on day 5,and have one half to the boards, and the other half is just being started on the boards. They're there from 7am to 5pm,so a total of almost 48 hrs of work so far! It took them 3 days just to strip the old roof off,not even the old boards up! Is this typical,or are they just slackers? The banging and yelling at 7am is a little too much!

  • My Husband is a carpenter and he has replaced many roofs as well. He said that there is no way it should take that long unless it is a huge house and only one guy. How many guys are working.? How big is the house?

  • It took our roofers three days. They started at 6 AM each day and quit around noon. They used NO power tools, either, lol, they hammered all the shingles on. It was nuts. I was like, dude, I'd so use a nail gun.

  • My FIL house took 3 days. Depends on what they are doing and the size of the house.

  • It took them almost 10 days to do mine. That was also stripping the baseboards off.

  • There are 5 guys. Its a two story home. Its old, maybe from the 40's or 50's. its just a straight 2 sided rectangle roof. No bells or whistles! lol

  • Depending on the size of the house an good crew could do it on the weekend.

Maybe they are getting paid hourly?

  • That sounds like it's taking too long, but if it's an old house, they may be having to do a lot of structural repair underneath the roof. That would make it take much longer. I think it took 2 days the last time ours was replaced, but it's not a really large house, and it's pretty much a straight-line roof, which is the simplest to replace.

  • It is just re-shingling or are they replacing the structure as well? If they're having to replace structure, depending on if it's just the sheathing or the roof trusses themselves, it could take well over a week. If it's just stripping off the shingles and re-shingling, a good crew can get it done in a couple days. Actually looking at the fact that it's 5 guys doing a 2 sided roof, they could get it done in one day.
