Do you think that President Thomas Jefferson really had a child from a slave named, Sally Hemmings?

Thomas Jefferson was a slave owner but had 6 children from one of his slaves named Sally Hemmings. She would have been his deceased wife's half sister. Sally's mother Elizabeth was a concubine to for Jefferson's father in law. Elizabeth was half white. So that made Sally 1/4 white and the children born to her and Jefferson 1/8 white? So not only could she possibly have passed but most definitely her children. He promised that when their children became 21 years old that he would free them.

  • Its something I've heard before. It probably has validity - many slave owners had relations with female slaves...

  • It hasn't been proven "beyond a shadow of a doubt", but it is very possibly true. Many children were a product of the slave owner and the slave.

  • for a class im in im (maybe) about to start reading "The Hemingses of Monticello" and you're pretty much right. Sally's living children were freed by Jefferson at 21 & passed in society as "white". they had 7 (supposed) children but only 5 lived past 1 year.

i think that its very very probable since it was such a common practice for the master to have children w/ his slaves.

  • Sally 1/4 white and the children born to her and Jefferson 1/8 white? How would a white man and a 1/4 white woman make children that were only 1/8 WHITE? Wouldn't they be 1/8 BLACK seeing as Thomas Jefferson was supposedly white?

    Why don't you ask him?

  • There were thousands of men who had children by slaves. It is not so hard to believe. ANd their wives looked the other way. Ugh. Jefferson and Sally Hemmings did have children ...it is in literature and history books.

Very good MathewsCandi... My mistake.. Sally was 1/4 black and 3/4 white. Her children were even less black but they were still considered 100% slaves.

The "one drop rule" was definitely in effect here. Just think some of you that think that you are 100% white could be mistaken. Especially since as many of your have pointed out that many of these slave owners had children from these slave women. I also findit interesting that Sally was the sister of his deceased wife.
