When do u ditch the carseat and use a booster seat?

My son is five and have a carseat that is also a booster but he still uses the car seat buckles I don't mind it because he seems so safe in it! And he fits in it just fine! But I seem other kids that are 3-4 using seat belts which I am not comfortable with at all. Just because the kid can use a seat belt doesn't mean he or she should.. So when is the right time your child started using a seatbelt?

  • Here is some information that is in the Car Seat Safety Group regarding the use of booster seats:

    * Booster seats should NEVER be used with just the lap belt only, or with the shoulder belt placed under the arm or behind the back.

    * If there is no headrest you MUST us a highback booster to provide some head support in an accident.

    * You should never use a booster seat with a child under 4 years old and 40lbs.

    * The lap belt should fit across the upper thighs and the shoulder belt should fit flat against the childs shoulder and across the middle of the shoulder. Some boosters do not fit every child correctly which is why it is important to try your child in the booster seat before you buy it.

How your child sit also effects how a booster fits. If your child tends to cross their legs or put their feet up on the seat in front it can push the lap belt out of positions.

  • The safest place in the car is the backset and in the middle. Next thing, a five point harness and rear facing. In our state once they weigh 20 lbs AND are a year old they forward face but you don't have to unless their legs are way long. Look at your carseat's weight and height limit. If you shop around and your kid isn't way tall its possible to keep kid at that age or longer in a five point harness convertible or booster seat. My almost 6 year old weighs 50 lbs and can still ride with a harness.

  • i was told that once your kids are 5 they can use a booster..but it is really up to you....but you do have to check what they booster maker says about weight..

  • Also if your child tends to slump or lean in their seat it can push the belt out of position. If your child does this you should consider keeping them in a 5 point harness until they can sit correctly.

    Hope that helps.
