Sit on This?

They kids broke down the sofa and it's so bad that I'm worried about it being dangerous. I've decided to get rid of it as of now and it's sitting at the curb.

Problem. Now there is nowhere to sit in the living room. I have no money to by a new sofa.

Any ideas on how I can create comfy seating areas very cheaply?

  • Craigslist sometimes has them listed for free as do local FreeCycles groups.

  • I woudl suggest Craigslist or Freecycle as well. Both sites are very user-friendly, and often times you can get things for very reasonable prices because people are just looking to get rid of stuff.

  • If the kids broke it so badly that you consider it dangerous, I'd hesitate to get a new one right away. Let them sit on the floor for a while, using pillows and blankets. The novelty of it will wear off after a while and then you have a good opportunity to discuss how and why we respect our property and treat it correctly.

  • what area do you live in
freecycle for your area, all items have to be free
also craigslist has some free stuff
if you spend a lot of time on those, keep looking for couch / sofa and free, if you have a way to move it, you can get a pretty good one for free, may take a week or so, and you have to be fast, but can be done

we got a free washer when ours went out, people had dryer that died and wanted a matching set, so nothing wrong with the washer-thanks rich people who have no better way to spend their money than to have a matching washing and dryer!

  • The cushions from the couch. We had to do that. Once when we moved, the people who were helping us dropped the couch and it fell down two flights of stairs. Luckily no one was hurt, but the couch was shattered. We just grabbed the cushions and stuck the couch by the dumpster. Just sit them on the floor.
Also, lay a couple of soft blankets out until you can get one.
Use the kitchen chairs, just move them back and forth.
Check out good will and thrift stores, we got the couch we have now at Goodwill, it was only $20, they also usually have other furniture like chairs for really cheap.
