How old should a child be to start karate?

  • I'm not experienced with this, but I think that they can start at pre-school age. Contact whomever it is that teaches karate in your area and find out what they offer and what their age suggestions are!

  • MOST SCHOOLS WILL NOT ALLOW CHILDREN UNDER 4. THEY NEED TO KNOW THEIR LEFT AND RIGHTS.

  • I used to teach a karate class for a couple of years. I would only take 6 yr and up. There attention span is not very good even at 6. You would have to check with the Sensei (teacher) and see what age they would take. I am sure it would be different with different teachers.

  • My son started at 4 years old, a few months ago. We checked out two schools and both allowed my son to sit in on a free class and participate. That's a great way to see if they like it before you invest in it.
