My basement smells like...

funk.
musty funk to be exact. How do I get rid of that smell? I've never had a basement before.

  • Oh, Lovin!..... rock, cement and dirt are all porous and can grow mildew and mold, LOL... Your best bet is the whole dehumidifier route to dry it out. They do make bags of this rocky lava type stuff that absorbs moisture and odors. Is the house air conditioned? Running the AC is like having a whole house dehumidifier. Now, you could seal the concrete block walls by painting them with waterproof cement paint and primer to help keep moisture out....

  • Basements have a tendency to get that musty smell to them. If your basement has windows I would open them up to air out the place or use a fan of some kind to draw out the musty air. Maybe get some air freshners of some kind to keep the basement smelling fresh. OUr basement always leaked during a heavy rain so the basement would have this damp musty smell to it.

  • Setting out bowls of coffee grounds, baking soda, vinegar, not mixed and maybe not at the same time. A dehumidifier will be your best bet though, just remember to empty it frequently or it won't run.

  • There's nothing down there that can mold. It's rock, cement, and dirt.

  • Bowls of charcoal like they use in fish aquariums can absorb odors.
