Is it bad to try and lose weight while your pregnant?

I gained over 50 lbs with my first pregnancy and didn't lose any afterward....less than a year later I am pregnant( 4 months) with my 2nd and being already overweight, I don't want to gain more. I feel like since being overweight I've had so many health issues...i'm borderline diabetic, high blood pressure, and have suddenly been diagnosed with a blood disorder(not sure if its related to weight). I'm not going overboard...I would never want to hurt my baby but just trying to walk more and eat healthy. So far I've lost 25 lbs... and I'm feeling great but some people are telling me that its bad to lose a lot of weight while pregnant?

I would ask your dr if it is safe. When you are overweight at the start of pregnancy they usually only want you to gain 15lbs. Continue to eat as healthy as possible (no skipping meals), drink plenty of water, and if the dr permits start talking walks for exercise. Make sure to talk with your dr about your concerns and once the baby is born get right on board with the diet and exercise. :) Good luck and be safe.

It's not a good idea to TRY and lose weight while pregnant. But...losing while you're pregnant isn't always dangerous...you're eating better now than before and walking so I think it's pretty normal to drop some at the beginning of your pregnancy. Just be sure not to diet, you need to eat! Talk to your doctor at your next appointment...as long as the baby is healthy and thriving you should be fine.

I had heard that is was bad to try to loose weight while you were pregnant because the body tends to store toxins in your fat cells to keep it out of your blood stream. However, if I read your post right you gained this weight while pregnant with the last one. So it shoudn't be too high in toxins. It is not like you are dumping 20 years of toxins back into your blood stream and onto your new baby. It sounds like you are doing a good thing.

I work in an OB/gyn office and if you are overweight, it is NOT unhealthy to lose weight.
