How many different types of witches are there?

I seen on another post that there are several different kinds of witches that believe and practice different stuff. What kind are you and what do you practice?

  • This is a little hard to answer. Really, a witch is simply someone that manipulates energy in order to change the world around her in one way or another. Now, there are Kitchen Witches, Pagan Witches, Christian Witches, Atheistic Witches, and the list goes on. However, generally the witch part stays the same, they are all manipulating energy. It's WHAT they believe that identifies them as Pagan, Christian or whatever. So there are as many different types of Witches as there are religions. In the case of a Kitchen Witch vs. Traditional Witch, it's simply the where and how they do their craft. A Kitchen witch practices mostly out of her (you guessed it) kitchen and uses food and other eatables to do their magic. While a traditional witch tends to mix nature magic, kitchen magic and a little of anything else...

  • The craft can vary by what path you take. Meaning Christian Witchcraft could be practiced in a completely different way than a Kemetic Witch... but, witchcraft is not a religion.. it is a practice that can be done on it's own, or to enhance the chosen path of the practioner.

I am a practicing Kemetic who also practices the Craft. Many of my spells and rituals are dedicated to the Gods of Kemet.

  • Now, all that said, Witchcraft is not a religion, it is a "craft", a practice. It can be done and is done by just about everyone regardless of their chosen religious path. Many people practice the craft without ever even giving it that title or understanding what they are doing. A Witch, is simply someone who embraces that practice and uses it purposefully as apposed to someone who simply stumbles in to the field during daily life.

The best quote I ever heard regarding Magic & Witchcraft was this "Magic, is simply the art of getting things done." And in many ways that is exactly true. While a witch may acknowledge that they are using Magic and purposefully try to master the art, the average "non-witch" simply does not...

Point being, a witch can walk any path, can be anyone... Because of that there are an unlimited number of types of witch...

  • Ask 100 different witches, you'll get 100 different answers. There can theoretically be as many types of witchcraft as there are witches who practice it.
