Should public school kids have to wear name tags?

Our local high school now requires the students to wear name tags. Its like a necklace with the badge on the end. If your child was in public school and had to wear one how would it make you feel and why? :)

  • I can see both sides...smaller schools shouldn't have to wear them, if you don't know your students, then you don't deserve to be a teacher....bigger schools are different story though, there are so many kids that identification would be for protection

  • No different than companies having employees wear id badges ... just shows that the people who are supposed to be there are the ones there ...

  • Great for personal safety ... when a student is expelled, have them turn in their ID ... easy for staff to spot people who shouldn't be on campus, such as students expelled for violence-related cause, drug dealers, etc.
And can only serve to further prepare students for the real world, much of which requires employees to wear ID

  • it's more of an id tag than a name tag.... they can scan it and it is used for lunch and also by administration. it's also handy if there are kids fighting and the teacher can get a quick way to id them. i loved it when i was teaching hs and i will love it when my kids get one in hs

  • It is for safety reasons and the larger schools do have them so they know who belongs there and if a kid is not wearing one then they have some questions to answer

  • I don't see what the problem would be. They do it in colleges. If anything it allows the teachers to put names with faces. It's hard to remember a couple of hundred students names. It also shows that the students belong on campus, not just anyone can walk in to the school and pose as a student.

  • It is also used in the lunchroom as an ID card and is swiped so the lunch ladies know the kid is using the right lunch account because you do have kids who try to use other accounts
