when did you go to a "big kid" booster seat in the car?

Is it 20lbs or 2yrs old... Or 20lbs AND 2yrs old?

My daughter will be 2 in November. Shes about 25lbs. So i dont know if its ok to het her a booster yet or not.
And im talking about the booster that uses a normal seatbelt.

  • The law here in Texas is 4 years. I believe other states have similar laws. Even without a law of 4 years, most 2-year-olds are not tall enough or mature enough to use a belt-positioning booster.

the minumum in almost all states is 40 lbs AND 4 years, your 2 year old should still be in a 5 point harness

  • You definitely don't want to put her in a booster seat until at least 4yrs old. Most children are booster ready at age 5 or 6. There are some great (and affordable) car seats out there, that allow you to rear face or forward face. My 2yr old just switched back to rear facing this week, as it's 500x safer than forward. If you're needing some car seat recommendations, check out the Car Seat Safety group here on cafemom. :)

  • Most boosters start at 40lb kids. They also need to be mature enough to not goof off in the seat. And no longer napping because the booster has no 5-point harness steals to safely hold a sleeping kid. You need a convertible seat, with the whole buckling 5-point harness with chest clip.

  • Not until AT LEAST 4 years old and 40 pounds. It is not safe for a 2 year old to even consider a booster seat at all.
Please copy and paste this link so you can see why a younger child is not ready for a booster.

My child will be two in November as well, and I'm going to keep her rear facing in a car seat as long as I can, because it's the SAFEST way for her to travel. No way is a two year old going to be safe in a booster.

  • no, she's 2 small and 2 young. Did she out grow her car seat? I would get her a Cosco Scenera if you're needing something for not much $$$$

  • My kids wont be in a booster until they are atleast 6yrs old & 40lbs. But the MINIMUM a child should be in a booster is 4yrs & 40lbs. Please join the car seat safety group and we can help you keep your child safe in the car.
