  • Pictorial form means using pictures to show a number. For this example, I'd draw a circle out of blue, label it 1,000, then draw two red squares, labeling each 100, four green triangles, labeling each 10, and six yellow ovals, labeling each 1. Put them in order from left to right, the blue circle, the red squares, the green triangles, the six ovals.

For place value expanded form, you'd either write 1 one thousand, 2 one hundreds, 4 tens, 6 ones or 1,000+200+40+6=1,246, depending on what was in the lesson.

  • I remember the logs. (Early 70's. they called it new math back then.) But that was only good for ones and tens. single logs (yes cut down trees) for ones. and bundles of ten for tens. I didn't realize they were color coding things now. The important thing is that your child knows that 1000's means 10 times more than 100's and it is too big a number to sit around counting all day. You could use money too. The word "pictorial" isn't the important part. Understanding the concept is the important part. The concept really should be from Kindergarten. Don't let the terms throw you off and make you think this is hard. Get in the habit of asking your child to look it up in the book. The terms are always explained in the chapter. I'm sure you can handle the concepts. (P.S. They change the official terms every few years to sell new textbooks.)

  • I teach 5th grade. 1000 is a solid block of 1000 cubes. 200 would be two squraes broken into 100 squares. 40 would be two "logs" broken into 10 and then you would have 6 individual squares.

Expanded form is always 1000+200+40+6. 1 one thousand, 2 one hundreds, 4 tens, 6 ones would be short word form.
