Babies Encyclopedia: How often should I bathe my baby?

CafeMom Team will be posting Baby Encyclopedia questions in the Babies Category from Tuesday till Friday of this week. For every question you answer, you'll be entered to win one of the $25 Gap Gift Cards that we're giving away each day!

But there's a catch... only "real" answers will be entered to win the $25 Gap Gift Card. If you do not have tested advice or an informed opinion on the topic, please wait to answer the next question. There will be plenty of opportunities to enter the contest.

We are using these questions to create a mom-tested resource for new and expecting parents, so try to use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling when writing your answers.

  • it depends on how often he is dirty, and how much he soils himself. very young babies don't need a full-out bath all the time.

  • Depends on how your baby is. This is what I did with all 4 of my. The first month or two they got a real good bath once a week. I would usually do a sponge bath every other day. Then after about 2 months I would get them a regular bath every other day unless they spit up or had explosive diarrhea then it was everyday. After about 6 months when they could sit up well then I gave them a bath every day. They love to play in the water and just sit there.

  • Babies do NOT need to be bathed every day. They really only need baths when they are dirty. For my second born, sometimes that was every day and sometimes it was every couple of days. He was GREAT at spitting up all over himself and me! Don't tell anyone, but my firstborn didn't get bathed for about 3 weeks. I wanted my husband to be there to take pictures and he was working crazy hours between his two jobs!

  • I bathe my son nightly. He just plays in the water, I only use soap a few nights though, usually only if he made a mess of himself with dinner or if he just generally stinks :-)

  • I think it depends on how old they are...I didn't bathe my daughter more than once a week when she was a newborn, but now at 9 months, with her crawling around & getting banana all over her body, she gets a bath every other night.

  • Depending on the child & what he is doing (big difference in 2mo & 10mo old).. I personally went about every 3-4 days I think..
Once she was old enough to enjoy it, sitting up & splash we had more but it was more for fun..
At almost 4yo she gets a bath usually every other night..

  • They don't need a bath everyday, unless they are clearly dirty. When they are really little they don't do much to actually get dirty. once they are old enough to crawl and pull up and move all over the house that's when you will notice they will be dirtier than before!! :)
