Breastfeeding off one side only

No matter how hard I try my 3 month old only eats off one side, and she still eats every 2 hours during the day. She sleeps through the night though (8 hours) Ive even tried stopping her prematurely and switching sides, nothing works. (Also burping/changing the feeding more) Is she eating so much because she only eats of one side (has from birth) or is it her making up for sleeping through the night. She is ebf.

  • Wait..is she only eating off the right or left or are you trying to get her to feed from both at each sitting?

She should only get one said per feeding. And switch for the next one.

If she is only eating off like the left and never the right...then I am not sure what to do.

  • oh, that sucks. One flat boobie & one full one. Stop offering her the one she likes. Believe it or not, she will eventually try the other breast. My Dr. told me to skip a feeding if she won't switch (i didn't really skip it, just waited it out longer). It was so hard to do, but it worked. She was so hungry she didn't care which breast she ate. .

  • It's ok...that is good and what she is supposed to do. She is supposed to empty one side per feeding. So that she can get the fore milk which is less fatty and the hind milk which is more fatty.

  • thanks! i guess i got confused by other sources saying babies generally finished one side and also ate from the other.

  • You're doing good! Feeding from one side at a time is fine. If you are uncomfortable, pump on the side she didn't feed off of. Good luck!

  • She might eventually start to nurse from both as her appetite increases.

  • Its perfectly fine. What you should do is nurse until baby comes off breast, the OFFER the other side. If baby takes it, fine, if not, fine too. If baby takes the other side, then nurse until baby comes off again, and again, OFFER the first side.

  • I agree with the others. It's perfectly ok for her to only eat off of one side, so long as you offer her the other breast next feeding.
