Any One Know Of A Good Fish?

I am looking for a good fish recipe. Also, what kind of fish is a good one for a beginner? I have never fixed fish before. My dh usually does it, but I would like to surprise him once and cook some. We don't like talipia. (sp?)

  • Try Ahi tuna. It tastes a lot like steak, meaning there is no fishy smell or taste to it. Its a really good starter fish.

  • If you have a good quality grocery store in your area, go into the meat/seafood section and talk to the guy behind the counter. Ask what he recommends, where it's caught, etc. That will give you an idea of the quality and freshness of the fish. Anything you get should be translucent, firm and smell like the ocean. If it smells fishy, avoid it. Most reputable fishmongers will be able to give you ideas how to prepare what's in season as well as help you make a good choice.

You may also want to check the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch list: to see what choices in your area are healthiest for you, your family and the environment. (A lot of farmed fish are high in mercury and antibiotics!)

  • My favorites are ling cod and salmon - you can do both on the BBQ wrapped in foil (and whatever additions, seasonings) - Buy as fresh as you can find and be sure not to overcook it.

  • Tilapia and Halibut are pretty forgiving when they are cooked, and are a mild white fish. You can pan fry in a little butter/olive oil, add some herbs and serve over rice - perfect! They are equally good baked.

  • Oh! Also, if you have a Trader Joe's market near you, they have a wonderful Ahi tuna in the freezer section that is already marinated. Just pull it out and pan fry it up, or grill it. It's very good!
