Health care politics run into economic reality: President forced to add caveats to promises made during height of debate

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama told voters repeatedly during the health care debate that the overhaul legislation would bring down fast-rising health care costs and save them money. Now, he's hemming and hawing on that.

So far, the law he signed earlier this year hasn't had the desired effect. An analysis from Medicare's Office of the Actuary this week said that the nation's health care tab will go up — not down — through 2019

  • I'm not surprised, all I've seen so far are rate increases. Since all of the health care BS went into effect we've started paying quite a bit more for insurance through hubby's work (gotta pay for that milk expressing room somehow, right?!?) But really it's just like any politician, make candy coated promises you can't keep to get elected and then once you're in oops, the sour middle shows through.

  • Those of us who were paying attention were well aware of the forthcoming problems.... Common sense is a huge indicator that what they were pandering was unrealistic. Remember Nancy said, we have to pass it to find out what's in it! None of them knew what was in it, none of them even read it, good heavens, it was written by the Apollo Alliance...
We were told "no more pre-existing condition discrimination", for adults, oops, WRONG! Oh well, that's the breaks, deal with it... And then a few days later, The No more Pre-existing conditions for kids, bit the dust too, oops, WRONG again. Oh well, deal again, The excuse was, Uhhh, there was language that they didn't know about. WTH??? IMHO, we have been made fools of, time after time...

  • Yeah, PBO said the cost would be high. They knew that from the beginning. Yes, they knew it and told all the people it would be "deficit neutral" or "will reduce the deficit" and on and on. Now, they knew all along it would be high. It think this is the largest "bait and switch" in all of recorded history.

  • If I were a betting woman, I would bet that I read more of the bill than anyone who voted to pass it. And I'd probably make a fortune (that would be taxed at the highest rate, of course).

Nope, not surprised here at all. We got stuck with a bag of mealy apples, all shiny and bright on the outside but dry and crumbly on the inside. They rushed this through because they knew that if anyone had the time to read it, it could never pass on its merits because it has none.

  • How about this little gem? Is anyone really surprised?

Kathleen Sebelius (Secretary of Health and Human Services) is threatening to shut out those insurance companies who criticize ObamaCare. "She warned that bad actors may be excluded from new health insurance markets that will open in 2014 under the law. They'd lose out on a big pool of customers, as many as 30 million people nationwide."

Secretary Sebelius has now made it official by threatening that all insurance companies that continue to publicly say ObamaCare will put them out of business will be, ummmm, put out of business.
