Why do people just assume that everyone knows a million letter abbreviations?

The list just keeps growing. It would not take that much longer to type out the words at least once. I spend a lot of time trying to figure out what each new one I run across means.

  • on this site the only ones you need to know are ones like this:

    DD- Dear Daughter
    DS- Dear Son
    DH- Dear Husband
    SD- StepDaughter
    SS - Step Son
    SO- Significant Other
    BF- Boy friend
    GF- Girl friend
    CM- Cafe Mom
LOL, LMAO, or LMFAO - means to laugh
these are the basics on this site. For any other ones that pop up, just ask.

Computer slang is very common on the internet, and it's not going away, so it's best to either learn it or stay off the net.

  • It's not like it's hard to figure out most of them... But since we have a letter count on answers we don't always have the option to spell everything out without taking up 2 boxes...

  • Why do people just assume that everyone knows a million letter abbreviations?

Because most of the abbreviations used here are not specific to this website and are in constant use around the internet. Most of them have been used longer than there's been an actual internet. People can't tell if this is your first day on line or your 2nd decade, but they assume that if you know how to use the internet, you are familiar with how it works, and that includes its language.
