My nieces & nephews have bad allergies, and my kids don't...

they don't have pets, and we do. Coincidence or not? They have allergies to everything. Just wondering if having animals help build an immunity?

  • I think it does help somewhat, but breastfeeding plays into it a lot more then having pets or not.

  • Pets do help prevent allergies to a certain degree .. but it doesn't keep children from having allergies at all.

  • No, it's just genetic.

  • No, I have horrible allergies and so does our middle son, our other 2 boys and my Hubby don't and we have 3 large dogs in the house. I also didn't develop allergies until I was in my late 20's, so I don't know if it was exposure, or my body chemistry changed after having babies.

  • Some kids have allergies, some don't. My BIL had food allergies when he was a kid (not sure if he still does, maybe to some, I don't think they are as severe), however neither DH or their other brother has any. It's like the pp said, it's genetics.

  • No, I had pets and allergies. Your kids just got the good genes.

  • My kids none of them had allergies I developed some when I was in my 20's we have always had pets. My grankids though do but some of that i think comes from their dads side. I'm not sure pets play into it or not

  • I have read several articles about how being raised with pets helps children to NOT have as many allergies. I do think there is truth to it because I have seen it with my own child and other children.

  • it's all genetics... iam allergic to pets, animals, etc... but growing up i had cats and dogs... and they didn't seem to bother me... once i went to college and lived in the pet free dorm... they bothered me when i would be home for a visit...
