1 Bump

4 month old and stage1 baby food?

She sits up just fine in her summer seat, i was thinking it might be okay to give her stage 1 baby food and maybe she would sleep better.

When is stage 1 okay?

  • Generally babies don't need anything other than formula or breast milk before 6 months. She will sleep for longer periods of time as she gets older.

  • Well she sits up on her own in her summer seat (like a bumbo)
so she can have it then?

  • Most peds will tell you 4 months but if she is breast feeding it could be beneficial to wait until 6 months. It isn't likely to help with the sleeping through the night though. You would only be giving a few table spoons for practice not nutrition. Nutrition will come from formula or breast milk until closer to 1 year.

  • Sitting in a bumbo is supported sitter, and stage 1 foods are fine to give at this point. Just don't expect it to help her sleep any better, it won't.

  • At 4 months, some doctors will tell you it's ok to start foods, BUT as But Mommie and rhianna1708 have stated, it most likely will not effect her sleep. At this stage, it is more practice then for nutrition.

  • The best thing to do would be to ask your pediatrician. Some say its ok now, and some would prefer that you wait. I started my little girl on stage 1 at around 4 1/2 months. Our pediatrician basically said what the other posts on here said. It is mainly for practice right now. She advised us that if she didn't seem to be digging it at first to wait a few days and then try again. She was perfectly content to take the food off the spoon into her mouth, nut once it was in there she didn't quite know what to do with it! She is slowly getting the hang of it, after the first month, Even though she still doesnt want to swallow sometimes

  • I would try watered down rice cereal first.

  • Wait until 6 months and give her fork mashed soft foods like avocado, sweet potato, banana, things like that. Solids will NOT help her sleep any better. Thats a wives tale :)
