Culturally Accepted

I see so many say on here that the reason people accept homosexuality so openly and willingly is because of how culturally accepted it is nowadays. But isn't this wrong? 2000 years ago it was MUCH more culturally accepted. It was nothing for a man to have a wife, mistress and young male 'companion' to satisfy his sexual needs. It was much more common place for young males to be used sexually than young females.

  • maybe because we 'live' closer to the time-frame of the cultural shift in the opposite direction? so really, what we've 'known' or accepted, is newer to us, yet at the same time, what we (and our parents, grandparents, etc) grew up with.
just randomly thinking here. 2000 yrs ago everyone wore basically the same clothing..there were no skirts for ladies and pants for men (for example)..everyone wore free-flowing garment. maybe this comes from the same cultural shift??

  • The difference is that while it was more common then for a "straight" man to have male partners homosexuality was not accepted. Through the early years of this country, when slavery was common, it was very common for slave boys to be used sexually. However, those boys that were used were generally chastised and considered "homosexual" which was NOT okay, even though the owner who used them was not... It was a common belief at that time, and previously, that only the one "receiving" was homosexual, the one giving was not... Homosexuality wasn't more accepted, it was just labeled differently and hidden away. As long as a man had a wife, children and was on top, it was okay because he wasn't homosexual - he was just sexual... If a man were poor, childless, unmarried or took the bottom he was seen as sinful, dirty and could be punished by law in many places...

  • Today on the other hand, we are much more culturally accepting. We can say someone is homosexual and not feel as if they are wrong, or sinful or dirty. We know they can be just as happy with another man (or woman) as they can be with the opposite sex. We no longger see a reason to produce laws against homosexual acts or limit the freedoms (besides marriage, which is coming) of someone simply because they are homosexual...

We also understand it more today. We know, proof positive, that homosexuality is natural and not a choice for most, we know it's something beautiful and that homosexuals can be just as happy and healthy as anyone else. We also know now that it's not a sign of perversion or illness and it's not "catchy" as was thought for years...

  • Now, all that said, we are still light years from accepting homosexuality in this culture the way it was accepted in many native cultures. Many Native cultures believed a homosexual male to be a blessing from the Gods. They believed he was of "two souls" and saw them as blessed beings. Because there was often a competition for women in these cultures we can easily see how this thinking came to be. Either way, we a quite far from a cultural view of them as a blessing, but I think most would be happy just to be seen as equal!

  • um... when i think about homosexuality i don't lump it together with promiscuity and using people for sex. however, in many ancient cultures homosexuals were considered spiritually superior as they embodied balance of both male and female.

  • i think those young males were used for sexual gratification because the whole birth control issue was HUGE back then. young boys don't get pregnant.
if a young male companion was used for sexual needs, isn't that MOLESTATION? That's not the same as consentual homosexual sex.

  • You are correct it use to be more acceptable then it became unacceptable now people are beginning to accept it again. There has always been homosexuality it is just out know. People don't hide it as much as they use to. So it is just out more it didn't cause it to happen more.

  • That may be... and in the past we have also had slavery and there was more child abuse... history means nothing to be in that respect.. I'm sorry, but I still don't agree with it.
