getting kids to understand?

I try to get my kids to understand why they can't go into certain peoples houses without telling them what is going on. We have a neighbor that does some illegal things and i do not let my children go to their house if their kids are out in the yard I will let them play with them but i absolutely refuse to let them go near their house there are always too many people coming and going and I know some of what goes on and it's illegal and I do not approve of it but I'm sure there are some that I don't know and I don't really wanna know.

  • I never explained things like this, I just repeated the answer: they can play here.

    'why can't I go there?'
    'because they can play here'
'can I go over to their house?'
    'they can play here'
'why don't you want me over there?'
    'they can play here.'

Simple. No lies, not contention, no insults... just 'no.'

  • You don't mention their ages, but you just have to keep telling them "no". It will be hard but they will come to accpet it.

  • At those ages, my kids just knew per me saying we don't go inside peoples houses. End of story, no ifs and or buts because they didn't want to be grounded.

  • I've just told my children no, I don't feel comfortable with you over there they can play here. Just like LindaClement said, I always gave my children a reason for any rule, but you certainly don't have too.
