1 Bump

My 3 week old breast fed baby hasn't had a poopy diaper in over 24 hours!!!!

She has had a ton of wet diapers but no poops in 24 plus hours! Is this a sign she isn't getting enough to eat? I am scared.

  • Because breastmilk has no additives, it's common for a baby to have a bowel movement only every 5-6 days.

As long as she is getting 6-10 wet diapers every 24 hours, she is getting enough to eat. And wet does not mean soaked but damp or moist.

  • drink some apple juice before her next feeding. Apple juice gives my son runnier stool, so in theory it would do the same through breast milk, right?

  • As long as you have the wet diapers she is getting enough. Breastmilk contains such good "stuff" that it can be completely absorbed into babies system leaving little to no waste. You are doing a great job mama!!

  • No worries!
I also had this concern, but spoke with a physical therapist and she says it is completely normal. They may only have one bowel movement a week!

  • Its completely normal. As long as when she DOES go, it's not dry, hard pellets, it's normal, and safe, for EBF babies to go up to like, 3 weeks between bowel movements. Breastmilk leaves very little waste, therefore, it's common to have less poop. It's also normal for EBF babies to poop every day, multiple times a day, every other day...basically anything goes!

  • It's completely normal. As long as when she DOES have a bm, it isn't extremely dry or hard, she's fine.

  • my son is 3 weeks too and he doesnt go everyday. his pediatrician said that is perfectly normal for a BF baby. Now yesterday he went 3 times lol. usually he's been going once every other day. call a local lactation consultant with La Leche League. I talked to a woman in my area yesterday and she eased a lot of my worries. They also hold monthly meetings for mommies to share stories and get help. It's wonderful to know you are not the only one going thru these things. GL!

**grin** Apple juice won't hurt mom, but won't do a thing for baby this way. OP, if baby isn't in pain or straining to pass something, no issues.

  • Very normal for a breastfed baby! They can go days without pooping and doctors would still not be concerned. My daughter went 5 days without pooping when she was 5 weeks old.

As long as when she does poop, she's not straining and the poop is not hard, she is fine. Call your pedi if you need more reassurance or if you are still concerned.
