  • I have a chocolate lab also...which I LOVE. The only reason I didn't recommend is that they are very hyper as puppies and their puppy stage can last well into 2 years old. And a 1-2 year old lab can weigh 60-75 lbs. lol. Easy to accidently hurt a small child. However, with training labs are the best dogs in the world. i wouldn't trade mine for anything!!

  • We have had 2 mini schnauzers, so has my mom and sister. They are great dogs and they do not shed at all. They are pure bred dogs though so they can be pricey. They are great with kids though in my experience.

  • we have border collies, and australian shepherds...and they are AMAZING with our son... any dog can be a good family dog, it's all about training and being consistent with them...kind of like a kid

  • I have a 10 yo and a 9 month old....I have a jack russell terrier, I wouldnt recommend. she can get a little snippy and super high energy and very territorial. shes a great dog and I love her but shes been with us for years and i think i i just got her and she didnt know the kids we'd have problems....

But I also have a Doxin.. we got her 2 years ago and she has the sweetest do anythiing to her kind of temperment. she is LOVE wrapped in doggy fur. my nine month old has grabbed her ears swatted at her and every other things infants do and she just doesnt care. Good luck finding a new memeber of the family hope this helps your decision.

  • With little one's you'll want to get a dog that is easy to train. Any dog can be a good family pet, but some take longer than others to train and house break. I know it's cliched, but a golden retriever is an excellent family pet. They almost self train and are inherently gentle. Other good breeds are cocker spaniels, labradors, and brittany spaniels.

  • My advice would be, don't get a puppy if you have a child on the way. Go to the animal shelter, ask them if they have any older (two or three years old) mellow dogs who are good with children.

I personally have an American Pit Bull Terrier/Boxer mix, he's almost five years old, we adopted him at 1 1/2. We socialized him, trained him, and got him certified as an AKC Canine Good Citizen. He's amazing with our 15 month old daughter, great with our cats, and he is protective but not aggressive at all; the Pit Bull Terrier is our breed of choice, but I don't recommend the breed for novice dog owners or to those who don't have enough time to do serious training.

  • We (us, families and friends) have great luck with Boxers, dachshunds, boston terriers and labs.

  • My vote is Miniature Schnauzer. We have had them for years. They don't shed, good with kids, intellegent and great companion dogs. Not to mention absolutely adorable. Puppies are definetely work but the good thing is you will be able to mold their personality with your love. :-) Have fun...
