To answer the random question - my daughter is almost three, so I put her in time out, and sometimes ask her to count to 20 so that she will calm down. I then stop and talk to her. I've found that sometimes she's just tired or frustrated, and she hasn't figured out how to calmly display that.
For an older kid, well, it would depend on the level of attitude he/she displays. :)
