  • If she has been vaccinated it should not be whooping cough. That is part of childhood immunizations (DPT). You may be mistaking it for croup. You are correct. They do not have over the counter meds for cough for children under the age of 6 yrs. If she is running a fever or has problems breathing then you will need to call your Ped or go to the ER. I wish you the best.

  • Call the pediatrician! Whooping cough is also known as pertussis and is very serious. In the meantime, run the hot water in the shower and sit in the bathroom with your daughter. Breathing in the steam from the hot shower will help her. If you have a cool mist vaporizer, use it. But please, call the doctor's office. Even though it's Saturday, if they're not open there will be a doctor or nurse on call who will get back to you.

  • I am thinking she probably has the croup. What you can do with her is step outside in the cold night air.. if she gets better.. it is croup. Unfortunately, it's going to happen. To help, you can steam up the bathroom (if you need ideas, email me)... you can put some Baby Vicks Vapor Rub on her, etc.. etc...

  • Do you vaccinate? If not call a homeopathic doctor. There are homeopathic remedies that help in the treatment of whooping cough and other illnesses. Despite what others think, if you do vaccinate, it doesn't mean that you are totally immune to pertussis. It is possible that even if you do vaccinate it is pertussis, but your doctor will not likely call it that. Take her to her regular doctor. But call first they may want to do a home visit.

  • If you really think it may be whooping cough your child MUST be seen my a doctor. It might be, like the pp said, croup. And there isn't much that can be done for croup at home other than a hot steamy bathroom or a cold out side. If it's really bad and you notice your child is having trouble breathing, pulling in of the skin by the neck or ribs the need to be see ASAP.

  • Sounds more like croup or a bad cold. Either way, a vapor rup. Rub it on her chest, back and bottom of the feet. A steamy hot shower, keep nose suctioned clear. A warm air humidifier. Go to the store and in the tea section and pick up some tea called Breathe Easy, and Gypsy Cold Care. They are made by :Traditional Medicinals. Walmart, smiths, winco, aka...most stores carry them. Keep her elevated to sleep, this will help the cough. Since she is already one years old, you can add honey to the tea, that will also help releive the cough. stear clear of dairy products if she is phlemy.
