My husband needs to lower his cholesterol. A friend recommended the Atkins diet. This does not make sense, because the Atkins is filled with meat and fat.

Have you heard this?
How does it work?

  • I agree - Atkins is a good way to burn fat fast because your body has nothing else to burn. However, meat has a lot of cholesterol in it! According to the Mayo Clinic, go with oatmeal & other things high in fiber; fish high in omega-3's (salmon is a great choice); walnuts/almonds; & olive oil

  • Yes, but it's been proven that depriving your body of carbs isn't good for you either. I used to work in a hospital, and whenever a heart attack case would come in, one of the first questions the patient would be asked is if he/she was on Atkins because the carb deprivation contributes to heart attacks. You have to give your body a balance of nutrients, NOT deprive it of one and overdo it on another.

  • Yes it works, because by depriving your body of carbs, it goes to the reserved fat to get the carbs, thus reducing cholesterol and weight and fat. I suggest you buy the book so you can really understand how and why it works.

  • Here's additional info about why Atkins is terrible for you --

  • No offense to the person that suggested it but Adkins will do nothing but RAISE his cholesterol through the roof. You need to talk to a registered dietician not your buddies. High cholesterol is serious and can lead to heart disease!! Adkins is one of the most unhealthy diets ever created. Not to say people dont lose weight, its just definitly NOT what he needs to do.
